On My Mark and Getting Ready

Tomorrow I will be running my first ever 5K. I know, right??!! Tonight hubby picked up my race packet and in it was this...

Oh my gosh, I have a real race number!! 231. Sounds lucky, don't you think?

I must confess that I am pretty nervous about this challenge. I'm proud of myself for how far I have come with my running, but there is a doubt lingering if I'm ready for this. I never in a million years would have believed that I would actually be entering a race. I am sitting here with goosebumps as I write this post!

I've never even been a spectator at a race so I'm a bit naive about what to expect tomorrow. I did find an article on what to expect from your first 5K, which was extremely helpful. The race that I'm running is a fundraiser for a local autism program. In the article, it mentioned that choosing one of these type races for your first was a good choice because people are there to have fun and show support for the charity/program rather than just to race. Pshew, glad I did that part right. I was also worried about what to eat for breakfast, but thanks to the article I now know to eat something light and make sure to drink lots of fluids. Guess it is toast and a grapefruit for breakfast tomorrow!

I know that I can do this. I've trained. I've ran 5K's on my own. I'm ready! I think my biggest obstacle is going to be staying in control of my competitive nature. What can I say? I like to win. However, for this race I keep trying to remind myself that winning this race is really to just be finishing not to be placing anywhere near the front. I know I run slow. I trained to first run the distance and only recently began focusing on my pace. I don't want to get frustrated as people pass me or tear myself down because I'm in the back. I want to run proud that I'm accomplishing something that I truly thought I could never do.

Tomorrow I will be a winner.

Any hints or tips from fellow runners? Of course all support and encouragement will be greatly appreciated!!

  4. good luck. don't go out to fast, sometimes you get carried away by the crowd. you most likely will go faster than norm b/c of the crowd and cheering. can't wait to hear all about it.

  6. I am not a fast runner either- that was hard to get used to as a competitive person. Along the way, I usually pick someone running in front of me -not too far in front ;)- and make sure I finish before him/her. Crossing the finish line is a huge sense of accomplishment and relief. I myself wondered what I was so worried about and was anxious to find out when the next race would be! Good Luck!
