I Thought I Had Time

I'm always curious to hear about Zoe's day when I pick her up from daycare. Some kid always does something shocking like hits another friend, or takes a toy, or says a potty word that Zoe is always eager to share. Oh and there is always the days when she tells me her friend was sick and threw up everywhere in the room...love hearing those stories.

But, I was not prepared when she got in the car the other day and right off the bat asks me if I had my belly button pierced. I asked her why she was asking and she told me that one of her friends mom's just got her belly button pierced and she was talking about it at school. Well then. I did answer her question and some of you may be surprised to hear this too, but yes, I told her, I used to have my belly button pierced. I went on to tell her that I took it out when I was pregnant with Dylan, then under my breath finished the sentence saying how now instead of a cute little hoop I have stretch mark decorating my tummy.

Zoe was quiet for a couple seconds after our conversation, but then...
"Mommy, can I get my belly button pierced?"

WHAT??!!
I thought for sure I had a few years to go before I had to deal with that question.
Needless to say she was pretty disappointed when I explained that she had to be at least 18 to get her belly button pierced so she had some waiting ahead of her.

Have your kids ever surprised you by asking a question earlier than you expected?

  2. haha. oh boy. She's starting young! Colby is still too little to ask some tough questions like that...but I'm still occassionaly shocked at what comes out of his mouth sometimes!

  3. Julia's too early comment was that she couldn't wait to be a lady someday so that she could drive and use scissors!

  4. The question that left me speechless was when my 5 year old niece said "Aunt Kimbo, exactly how did that baby get in your tummy?" (I'm 8.5 months pregnant). I tried to brush it off with the response "God put her there."

She cocked her head to the side and said "I don't think that's the whole story."

I nearly choked. I took that moment to refer her and her question to her own mother (my sister-in-law). I can just imagine the questions that my own baby girl will ask in the coming years.

  5. when I was about 8 months pregnant with dd I was at the mall getting my lunch and behind me were a few teenagers. The one gal says to the others that she wants to get her belly button pierced. I just had to giggle because I was right at the point where my belly button had popped...I couldn't imagine what would have happened to me if I had it pierced. A friend told me that she had to remove her ring until afterward and then have it repierced.
My dd knows this story and was grossed out by it. It is really hard to get her to ask me such things.

  8. So funny! Just last night Tommy asked if I was going to sleep in his bed (odd, rarely happens).

I said, No, I sleep with Daddy in our bed.
    Why?
    Because we're married. When you grown up, you can sleep in a bed with your wife. {Why am I trying to have this conversation with a 3 yo?}
Oh yeah, when I get married, I'm going to have a ring on my finger. I'm going to get a green ring.

And, there you have it folks. Hopefully he doesn't try to get married at daycare today.
