My Niche

I've been blogging for about two years now, although really didn't begin consistently blogging until this past summer. I enjoy writing, sharing pictures and stories about my family, talking about my Weight Loss, reviewing products, hosting giveaways...I pretty much like everything there is about blogging. Most importantly I enjoy the community of bloggers. I have "met" so many great people throughout the blogosphere and like to visit them to see what's happening in their lives. I have even had the pleasure of meeting some bloggers in real life, which was such a fun experience.

As I blog more and more, I can't help but want to learn about how to become a better blogger. There are so many successful bloggers out there and by successful, I mean wonderful writers who have loyal readers and commenters. Who doesn't want to have a fan club and comments galore on their posts?

As I read peoples blogging tips, one thing that always jumps out at me is that most of them tell you to "find your niche" and stick with it. For example, Roni's niche is obviously weight loss, Classy Mommy's is sharing family products and giveaways, SassyHomemakers is all things home, and so on.

Mine?
Um.
Hmmm.
Well.

I don't think I really have a niche. I blog about my kids, my husband, family, friends, teaching, weight loss, and pretty much anything and everything else that pops into my head. I blog whatever makes me happy at the moment.

Now I realize that some are going to say, "Mel, you gotta narrow it down", but you know what? I don't think I have to. I visit some blogs like hers, hers, hers, and hers, plus many, many more because I like the variety of what they post about. Sometimes I want to be surprised when I open up my reader or visit a blog. Maybe I'll see a new picture, maybe I'll read about a great birthday party plan, maybe I'll find out they experienced a miracle, maybe, maybe, maybe.

I like variety.
I like surprises.
I like randomness.
I like blogging about LIFE!

So there you have it.
My niche: "My Life"

Do you think its important to have a niche?
What's your niche?

  1. My niche is also my life. I would 10 blogs if someone asked me to narrow it all down. LOL!

  2. My niche is weight loss/fitness. I also have a personal blog that I haven't used lately because I'm finally focused BUT I will be changing that and will have one for personal stuff.

I do think it's important to narrow down a niche IF you want to take it to a business level but blogging about your life, if that's your thing, is fine too.

    Just some thoughts!

  3. Amen! Why must a blogger have a niche spelled out? Shouldn't our blogs be whatever we want to write about on a given day? I agree with you that it is fun to go to my Google Reader and be surprised by what I will find each day from my favorite bloggers...including you.

  4. I completely understand how you feel...I was starting my blog to help promote my business but then also throw my life in there as well. Still trying to figure out what direction I want to go in, lol.

  5. I have had the same inner struggle going on. I am pretty new to blogging. I love it, but I have also been wondering what my niche is? I think you are right, my niche is "My Life" too. Thanks for the inspiration.

  6. I think those of us who are "Mommy Bloggers" really benefit from the fact that we can open ourselves up to so many topics, both as writers and readers. Pretty much anything can fall under the category of parenting, I think, when you are actually a parent. I like variety too:)

  7. I've often thought about this too and wondered should I separate my knitting/spinning from kids, or from down syndrome? But like you, I like the variety so I leave it as life. I love gaining new readers and meeting new people - but I also love the fact that I have such a good "journal" of my days.

  10. I'm all about the variety! I wrote an article once about my blog and called it a Mom Blogger Variety Show. I couldn't just have one focus. I do have a separate blog though for weight loss/health because it felt like I needed to keep it separate for my own benefit.

  11. I have struggled with this, and I finally decided (at Blissdom) that my niche is diarist/memoirist -- and that IS a niche. And it's awesome! :-) People like the variety!! :-)
